Villa Bardini Garden

Villa Bardini Garden Discover Florence from Pensione Bencistà Villa Bardini Garden is one of the lesser-known corners of the city, yet it seduces visitors with its pleasant environment and the wonderful views over Florence that can be enjoyed from the terrace. The history itself of Villa Bardini is fascinating. The property belonged to Stefano Bardini, a prominent art dealer and antiquarian. When the last member of the family passed away, the Villa was subject to inheritance disputes and left in a state of neglect. Thanks to the intervention of various political forces, the will of Ugo Bardini was finally implemented, and the property was donated to the city of Florence. Carefully restored, the garden is now open to the public and can be visited with a single ticket in combination with the nearby Boboli Gardens. The garden reflects the taste of its various owners, who lived it and modified it ever since the Middle Age. Bardini implemented the largest number of renovations and placed important statues in the garden (some of which have been lost). He removed the medieval elements and built the main avenue, while keeping some of the existing features like the grove, the English and baroque garden […]

Pensione Bencistà and the prominent people of Florence

Pensione Bencistà and the prominent people of Florence Leonardo Ximenes and the Ximenian Observatory (also called Observatory of San Giovannino) On December 27th, 1716 a man was born in Trapani who, through his studies and hydraulic works, would give prestige to the scientific culture of Florence: Leonardo Ximenes. Right in front of the incomplete façade of the Church of San Lorenzo stands a building surmounted by a small white dome, which can be seen from several viewpoints of the city: it’s the Ximenian Observatory, one of Italy’s meteorological and geophysical observatories, which is part of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. It is located on the top floor of the convent of San Giovannino (hence the name) which is run by the Piarist Fathers, in the same building where, in 1756, it had been founded by the Jesuit Leonardo Ximenes. The works of Leonardo Ximenes are numerous and varied. Born in Trapani, he was then transferred to Tuscany by the Society of Jesus. Here he dedicated himself to hydraulics studies, supervising important works such as the reclamation of the Maremma area. The Grand Duke of Tuscany chose him as a cartographer and engineer, consulting him on important issues. Today many […]

March 25: Florentine New Year Day

March 25: Florentine New Year Day On March 25, we celebrate the Florentine New Year day In ancient times the year began with the spring, awakening of nature and true new beginning. Florence, since the Middle Ages, established as the first day of the year on 25th March, when is celebrated the “Announcement of the Incarnation of Christ” symbol of the new life of faith. In 1582 entered into force the Gregorian calendar, and the year started with the 1st of January Anyway the Florentine Republic continued to celebrate New Year on March 25. It was the Grand Duke Francis III of Lorraine to establish that calendar will begin the 1st of January. Despite the new decree, the tradition of Florentine New Year has remained steady in the city’s culture. Nowadays the Florentine New Year is celebrated in a symbolic way with a procession starting from the Palazzo di Parte Guelfa, through the streets of the city, to the church of the Santissima Annunziata. At effigy of Mary Annunciation are brought as gifts white lilies has always been a symbol of purity, and later the emblem of Florence. Growing local – Bencistà shortens its food chain

Growing local – Bencistà shortens its food chain From spring 2016, Pensione Bencistà will enhance its countryside’s roots, creating a new kitchen-garden to supply and delight the guests of the restaurant. Bencistà’s kitchen-garden will bring an exciting new facet to the visitors’ wellbeing by enriching the quality of the food-experience we offer our guests. On top of enjoying delicious Tuscan recipes on our stunning terrace, Bencistà’s clients will now be able to appreciate the countryside’s roots of the Pensione by eating freshly picked vegetables coming directly from our garden! Moreover, while walking around the park, clients will have the opportunity to meet Chris, the kitchen-garden manager. Just out of his training in the Royal Botanic Garden of Kew, London, Chris will be available to offer explanations and demonstrations on the delicious fresh plants you will feed on in the restaurant. Quality and sustainability of food have long been themes that deeply touch the Simoni family, and this year we have decided to actively participate in the growing discussion around the topic of food. Bencistà is planning to do so by returning to make productive use of the park surrounding the villa, re-establishing some of the food production that was once traditionally practiced on these fertile soils. We indeed believe this is an ethically meaningful and ‘taste-full’ choice that will heighten our guest’s awareness and experience. Buon appetito!

Pietro il Gottoso (Peter the Gouty)

Pietro il Gottoso (Peter the Gouty) June 14th 2016 marks the 600th anniversary of the birth of Pietro de’ Medici, also known as Peter the Gouty. Son of Cosimo ‘the Elder’ and father of Lorenzo the Magnificent, Peter’s fame has been overshadowed by these two notable persons of Florence’s history, but in reality he was a politician and patron of the arts of considerable importance. Not only he managed to strengthen the political power of the House of Medici, but he also continued the patronage activity started by his father Cosimo. In particular, Peter began to collect fine items such as cameos, tapestries and gems, which were considered of great value for the social prestige of European courts. He also engaged in the collection of books, studied Flemish art and commissioned important works of art and architecture. The introduction of the lily flower on the family coat of arms is also ascribed to him. Louis XI gave Peter the honor to decorate one of the balls on the Medici coat of arms with golden lilies on a blue shield. Until then, the lily had only represented the Houses of Anjou. From the French lily descended the Florentine symbol. In 1444 […]

Notwithstanding the rainy spring, Bencista’s kitchen garden is flourishing

Notwithstanding the rainy spring, Bencista’s kitchen garden is flourishing by Chris (the Kitchen gardener) Having gardened for many years in England, I was greatly looking forward to working under the abundant Italian sun. Despite the Italian spring feeling incredibly English this year, with more days being wet than dry, the crops in Bencista’s organic kitchen-garden (“orto”) are now beginning to flourish. Picked in the morning and cooked the same day by our great chefs; zucchini, insalata, ravanelli, bieta, cicoria, and cavolo nero are now regularly being turned into delicious, simple Tuscan dishes for our guests. We await the summer bursting and the suns strong southern energies ripening our pomodori, piselli, and bacelli. Dining at Bencista’ is the perfect way to enjoy wonderful Tuscan food grown completely organically in the hotel’s park. The Pensione’s attention to sustainability also flourishes in the orto thanks to a fruitful mix of old techniques with innovative ones. Come and try it yourself – and do not hesitate to take a look around the orto to see where the food comes from! We are sure you won’t be disappointed!
